Cast them updrift with just enough weight to sink back down towards the boat and work them back up and repeat until you get find the fish you've marked previously or are prospecting around for.
Can also deadstick them out the back on anchor or slow drifts while you float baits out or do a spot of slow pitch jigging or whatever working closer to the bottom. One thing is guaranteed though that if a fish hits it then you know it will be a good one.... 
Also great for longer casts and fast mechanical jerking for pelagic species whether its across the surface column or back up through a bait patch that is showing signs of larger fish presently feeding (scattered bait or solid readings on your sounder)
